The Republic of Costa Rica is a country in Central America bordered by Nicaragua to the north and Panama to the southeast. Costa Rica lies on the isthmus of Central America. To the west of Costa Rica is the Pacific Ocean and to the east is the Caribbean Sea. The country is mostly flat, but in the centre runs a mountain range, part of the Central American cordilleras. The highest point is Cerro Chirripó (3820 metres) in the Cordillera de Talamanca. The country is home to vast national parks and reserves (25% of the land is protected). Many of these consist of tropical rainforest. In addition, other types of nature also occur in Costa Rica.
Costa Rica is home to a very wide variety of plants and animals. Although the country covers only 0.03% of the earth's land area, it contains 5% of biodiversity. About a quarter of the country is protected national park or other protected area.
