The square of excuses was in the middle of a bustling city, somewhere in Europe or South America, in the 1920s. This was where people gathered, seemingly by chance, but everyone knew better. It was a meeting place for people with an excuse, an unspoken appointment with no set time or reason.
One sunny morning, a woman stood by the fountain, her eyes scanning the crowd. "How are you?" she asked nonchalantly as she bumped into an acquaintance. "I was on my way to the bathhouse when I thought I saw someone I knew,"
Her interlocutor laughed softly. "Not looked closely surely? Still swear I saw him. But never mind."He took a moment to study her. "You look good, by the way! Have you lost weight?
She smiled back, almost embarrassed by the compliment. "Maybe," she replied airily. "Do you maybe have time for a drink? There is a nice café around the corner,"
"That sounds good," he responded with a wink. "You look great too, by the way. That skirt, wow, tight is fashion now, right?"
She nodded in agreement as they slowly strolled together towards the café. "It's still early," he remarked, looking at his pocket watch. "Maybe we could stay a little longer this afternoon, if you're not too busy,"
They smiled at each other, with a tacit understanding that in this square, time is always flexible, and excuses are a way to make something more of the day.
