An alley in a hushed town, somewhere deep in Tuscany. On the cobblestones stands a slightly faded Alfa Romeo 1900 from the early 1950s, steaming with rain, as if it has just completed a fiery love dance with the asphalt. Look at that threatening sky-a painter from the Golden Age would no doubt have used this scene for a naval battle on the Scheldt, where we were trying to keep the English at bay.
But today, no cannons, just engines roaring during the Mille Miglia. This Alfa Romeo takes part in a battle on wheels, between English, Italians, French and Germans. Who wins is written in the future. The reality? Rain. A good excuse for an espresso.
This painting, as if from the hand of a doubting old master, would not look out of place in a room full of 17th-century hero portraits. An odd duck? Perhaps. But it does stand out
