Hylas and the Nymphs, John William Waterhouse (1896)
A mythological scene depicts Hylas' fatal encounter with water nymphs from the Argonauts tale. A dark-haired youth in blue robes with a red belt kneels at the water's edge, pitcher in hand, reaching toward a nude nymph who grasps his arm. Six identical nymphs surround her, their long dark hair adorned with white and yellow flowers, all gazing at him from among the lily pads.
