Horse of Marken at dusk | Handmade Watercolour Painting by WatercolorWall

This watercolour painting depicts The Horse of Marken in the tranquil atmosphere of twilight, created entirely by hand. The lighthouse forms the unmistakable focal point of the work and immediately draws the eye, rising powerfully yet serenely against the evening sky.

The sky is composed of a deep, dark blue hue that gradually flows into rich purple and pink. This soft, almost dreamlike colour transition has been subtly applied with an airbrush on watercolour paper, creating a fluid and atmospheric background that enhances the tranquillity of the moment.

The painting is executed in a characteristic Line & Wash style: refined linework provides structure and detail to the lighthouse, whilst the watercolour adds depth and nuance to light and colour.

The foreground has been deliberately kept dark and features silhouette-like forms. Here, the lapping water, the small beach and the marram grass are depicted only suggestively. This minimalist approach enhances the contrast with the illuminated lighthouse and contributes to the mysterious, almost timeless atmosphere of the whole.

The work exudes tranquillity, space and a touch of melancholy—an ode to the Dutch coastal landscape in the soft light of day as it fades into night.
