It is the playground of the Nouméa capital: the Îlot Maître in the lagoon of New Caledonia. Speedboats sail from the ferry terminal in the Baie de Moselle to the island, four nautical miles away, in 20 minutes. Just 700 metres long and no more than 150 metres wide, the islet is located in a 200-hectare marine reserve off Nouméa.
The island's landmark is the elevated villas of the Hotel L'Escapade. The only accommodation on the island also offers double rooms in bungalows on land.
A pool restaurant with bar and a Chemin Kanak, which presents the universe of the indigenous Melanesian population at five stations, complete the holiday complex. Anyone you meet here is either a holidaymaker or an excursionist. The island has no permanent residents.
