The Hof van Sonoy is a courtyard in Alkmaar. It has the status of a national monument.
The current Hof van Sonoy was formerly the White Court or Saint Mary Magdalene Monastery. The monastery came into the hands of the city in 1572 and the hofje was then used to house city dwellers who had become homeless because their houses had been demolished for the construction of the new city defences. After the siege, the hof was sold to Diederik Sonoy, governor of the Noorderkwartier, who lived here for several years. Sonoy played a key role in the victory over the Spaniards in 1573. His name has remained linked to this place.
The next owner was Mr. Willem van Bardes. He had the striking octagonal tower built. The gate with the coat of arms of Bardes dates from the beginning of the 17th century. In 1743 the Hof came into the possession of the Reformed Congregation, who established a home for old men and women here. The later placed plaque on the outside of the gate reminds of this. This gate was adopted in the 1970s and restored by the Alkmaar Historical Society, which now uses it as its logo. The left building is now a restaurant.
