Heliconius butterflies are known for their mimicry of Müller: different species that are poisonous or unpalatable mimic each other in appearance. Within different Heliconius species subspecies occur with very different colour patterns. Butterflies of different species from the same area can be very similar: they form a so-called mimicry ring. At the same time, they differ in wing pattern from butterflies of the same species from a different geographical region.
