Until a few years ago, Catholicism was a compulsory religion for Kanaks - as stipulated by their Grand Chief. Today, as indigenous people of New Caledonia, the Kanaks are once again free to express and practise their faith. Totems and guardian figures are deeply rooted in their religion, as can be seen in this photo.
