About the artwork

Grote Kerk (De Rijp)

Built in 1529 (nave)
1535-1538 (transept and choir)
1661 (west tower)
Restoration(s) 1654 (after fire largely rebuilt)

The Grote Kerk is a Dutch Reformed Church in the village of De Rijp in the province of North Holland.

History
The late Gothic church was built in the period 1529 to 1538. The nave of the church was completed in 1529. A few years later the church was extended with a transept and a five-sided choir. In the village fire of 1654 the church went largely up in flames. The church was then rebuilt. The west tower was the last element to be built in 1661. In the tower there are two hatch bells, which were cast by bell-founder Antoni Wilkes.

Inside the church there are stained glass windows that were donated by various towns after the fire and rebuilding of the church. One of the windows, donated by Haarlem and made by Pieter Holsteyn, shows the conquest of Damiate by the crusaders. The pulpit, made by Hendrick Bruno, dates, like the baptismal garden and the pews, from the second half of the 17th century. In the church there is also a ship model from 1696 and a Charity statue from 1670. The organ was made in 1854 by the organ builder C.G.F. Witte.
