Großglockner Hochalpenstraße
The Großglockner can be reached via the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße, which runs from Zell am See via Bruck towards Heiligenblut. The mountain was first climbed in 1800 by Franz Xaver von Salm-Reifferscheid, bishop of Gurk-Klagenfurt, in a group of six climbers. The Großglockner Hochalpenstraße is a 47.8 km toll road with many (numbered) bends. The Großglockner Pass is a 2505-metre mountain pass on the border between the Austrian states of Salzburg and Carinthia. The pass, usually called Hochtor, is part of the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße, a high-alpine mountain road connecting the two states.
Mountain pass at 2,575 metres
Actually, the pass height is 2,575 metres, but a tunnel at 2,505 metres provides the actual connection between Fusch an der Großglocknerstraße via another pass, the Fuscher Törl, to the Carinthian Mölltal. The route is travelled by many motorcyclists. Avid cyclists also climb this road; yours truly has also climbed the Großglockner from both sides.
