Gerard van Honthorst (Gerrit van Honthorst) (November 4, 1592 - April 27, 1656) was a Dutch painter of the Golden Age who became known for his depiction of artificially lit scenes, eventually earning the nickname Gherardo delle Notti ("Gerard of the Nights"). Early in his career, he visited Rome, where he had great success painting in a style influenced by Caravaggio. After returning to Holland, he became a prominent portrait painter.
