Frozen Heart Blooming with Frosted Roses

by Skye Studio

An anatomical heart, drawn in fine engraved lines and washed in pale ice blue, floats at the centre of a frozen world. From the great vessels at its top, thick stems rise and burst into roses, their deep red petals edged with white frost and hung with tiny icicles. More roses cluster on the left and right sides, some tightly closed, others fully open. Beneath the heart, branching brown vessels spread downward like roots, and icicles cling to their tips as if the whole organ had been caught mid-growth by a sudden freeze.

The background resembles the feathery crystals that form on a frozen windowpane, in pale blue and white that leave the red roses and rust-brown roots as the strongest notes. Fine cross-hatching gives the heart the feel of a vintage medical engraving, while the roses add a softer, romantic touch.

This piece belongs to a series inspired by the idea of growing a flower that can't bloom, in a dream that can't come true. Here, the impossible bloom may suggest love flowering in spite of the cold. The mood is tender, bittersweet and quietly resilient, and the blend of anatomy, botany and winter imagery will appeal to anyone who loves gothic-romantic, symbolic illustration.
