The flag of Germany (German: Flagge der Bundesrepublik Deutschland or Bundesflagge) is a horizontal tricolor of black (top), red and "gold" (yellow). In its present form, the flag was adopted by Germany
in March 1848 by the German Union (until 1866),
in November 1848 by the National Assembly at Frankfurt by Reichstag,
in 1919 by the Weimar Constitution, and abolished by the National Socialists in 1933,
in 1949 by the constitution of Bonn.
In the time of 1867-1918 and 1933-1945, the colors were black, white and red. In addition to the "ordinary" tricolor, there is also a version with the coat of arms of Germany in the middle; this serves as a service flag and may only be used by the government and the military. The naval flag is the same as the service flag, but with a dovetail. It is not uncommon to see a flag with the coat of arms of Germany, but with a dot at the bottom. Because of the coat of arms in the flag, it is easily confused with the service flag.
