Oman, officially the Sultanate of Oman (Arabic: سلطنة عُمان Salṭanat ʿUmān), is a sultanate in western Asia, on the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It borders the United Arab Emirates to the northwest, Saudi Arabia to the west, and Yemen to the southwest. Its area covers 309,500 km². Until August 9, 1970, it was known as Muscat and Oman.

The climate is diverse, with humid coastal regions and dry, warm inland areas. In the desert the temperature in summer can reach 54° C. June has the highest average temperature of 36° C. A temperature difference of over 10 °C between the south and east of the country is not uncommon. Most western tourists visit the country between October and April, but visitors from the region prefer the rainy season.
