Vietnam - The photo shows a traditional Vietnamese fishing boat off the Con Dao archipelago in southern Vietnam. In contrast to the smaller rowing and wooden boats used for coastal fishing, this is a larger, motorised working boat designed for longer fishing trips. The typical bright colours - blue, red and green - not only stand for the regional style, but also serve to improve visibility on the open sea. There are barrels, storage containers, nets and ropes on board, which indicate a mixed fishing method, presumably shrimp or coastal fishing. The pumping of water over the hull is striking: an indication that the boat has just returned or that the bilge water is regularly drained. In the background, other fishing boats are moored in front of a densely overgrown hilly landscape - a typical image for Con Dao, where fishing is still an important source of livelihood for the island's population. The motif combines maritime culture, traditional crafts and everyday scenes from the tropical island archipelago - far removed from mass tourism.
