black chalk, brush in colours in watercolour and opaque paint, h 370mm × w 550mm. Fish brought in by flatboats were sorted and auctioned on Scheveningen beach. Fishermen's wives brought large baskets to fill with fresh fish and sell them in town. This watercolour is not from the Drucker-Fraser collection, but from the 1892 bequest of jhr.mr P.A. van den Velden. The bequest formed the basis of the Rijksmuseum's 19th-century drawings and watercolours collection.
