200 years B.C. lived Archimedes, an important scientist. The king at the time posed a question to Archimedes; he recently had a crown designed that was 100% made of gold. Now the king did not know whether it was truly made of gold. It was up to Archimedes to find out whether the crown actually contained only gold.
Archimedes had it weighed first, and the crown was indeed as heavy as what the blacksmith claimed, but this still proved nothing. How was Archimedes supposed to prove that the crown was actually made of gold alone? Archimedes decided to brood about it further in the bath.
As he stepped into the bathtub, he saw the water in the tub rise. At that moment, Archimedes realised something: when an object is immersed in water, the water rises (the water has to make way for the object). And objects of the same density and size therefore always move the same amount of water.
He had the solution; if he immersed a lump of solid gold of exactly the same weight as the crown then it should displace the exact same amount of water as the crown itself. This way, he could prove whether the crown was indeed made of solid gold.
As soon as he figured this out, he jumped out of the bath and ran naked through the streets towards the king, shouting ''Eureka!!!'' as he went.
