About "Equestrian statue in Cádiz, the city of light"

by Silva Wischeropp

About the artwork

Cádiz, the city of light on the blue sea, is one of the most interesting harbour cities on the Spanish Atlantic coast. Global trade brought wealth to the city. Cádiz is considered to be the oldest city on European soil and still retains many traces of its long history.

The city of Cádiz is the place on the Costa de la Luz that is most closely connected to the sea. And this in several respects: geographically, economically and culturally. Here we find a wide range of cultural offerings, historic buildings, interesting museums and many bars and restaurants with local specialities such as fish and seafood.

The Cádiz of modern times is located on a headland, at the north-western tip of which lies the historic old town. The old centre is almost completely surrounded by city walls, with a maze of alleyways and squares in between.
Cádiz is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on three sides. Since 2015, the Pepa, one of the highest suspension bridges in Europe, has spanned the bay of Cádiz. Over 120 towers characterise the cityscape. From the top, traders had a direct view of the harbour and the incoming ships.

To get your bearings, it is therefore not a bad idea to first walk around the old town along the coastline and then explore the city centre.
