The Diefdijk is a cross dike that was built in 1284 on the already existing thief road. In the 18th century it became part of the Hollandse Waterlinie. The dike was also part of the 19th century New Dutch Waterline. The dike still serves as a full-fledged (second) water defence that protects the Alblasserwaard and Vijfheerenlanden from flooding from the Betuwe and is one of the most important inland dikes in the Netherlands. It was traditionally, and since 1820 by law, the border between Holland and Gelderland. Due to a municipal redivision and the creation of the municipality Vijfheerenlanden it has been the border between the provinces of Utrecht and Gelderland since 1 January 2019.
