Australia is a country of extremes - and this picture sums it up perfectly. A tarmac road, engulfed by the red desert soil, closed and torn up. "Road Closed" is written on the sign - and what sounds like an everyday traffic announcement is here an impressive reminder of who is really in charge in this region: nature.
It rarely rains in the outback. But when the heavens open their floodgates, it rains heavily. Water finds its way, and in a country without a developed drainage system, this often means flooding, erosion - and destroyed infrastructure. The huge cracks in the tarmac seem almost surreal, like a memorial to the transience of human constructions in a landscape that has remained unchanged for millions of years.
The rich red of the earth, the deep blue of the sky and the bright yellow warning signs create a visual interplay that seems almost graphic - a natural event captured with a documentary eye and artistic flair. This photo stands for a spirit of adventure, respect for the elements - and for the realisation that not every road leads to the destination.
A statement for all those who are inspired by the unexpected.
