I've photographed it so many times and always love coming back: Eilean Donan Castle is one of Scotland's most famous and picturesque castles, situated on a small tidal island at the confluence of three lochs: Loch Duich, Loch Long and Loch Alsh. The castle rises majestically on a rock surrounded by water and can only be reached via a stone bridge. Its massive stone walls and central tower reflect its medieval defences, while the towers and battlements form a romantic backdrop. The castle is particularly impressive at sunset or in the early hours of the morning, when wafts of mist lie over the still waters and lend the castle a mystical aura.
The Scottish Highlands themselves form one of the most spectacular natural backdrops in Europe. Vast moorland landscapes, rugged mountain peaks and deep, dark lochs characterise the region, while fog and changeable weather lend the scenery a dramatic atmosphere. Here you quickly feel transported to another time, surrounded by the silence of nature, broken only by the call of an eagle or the sound of a distant waterfall. Eilean Donan Castle stands in the midst of this wild beauty and epitomises the spirit of the Highlands - mysterious, sublime and surrounded by an everlasting magic.
