The photo shows a stretch of dune landscape near the Zuiderheide and the Blukbos, near Hilversum. The partly overgrown dunes are seen in an overcast sky, with the woods around Zuiderheide in the background. Parts of the dunes are overgrown with heather plants and the sand between them undulates slightly.
The inspiration for this photo are the dunes themselves. I often walk there myself with my partner and the dunes look different every season. Capturing and imparting the feeling and atmosphere at the dunes on Zuiderheide is central to this work.
The feeling it gives is that of peace, being one with nature and that of timelessness. The dunes themselves have been there for thousands of years, and have a history of their own. Being allowed to stand on them as a mortal gives a feeling of respect for the primal nature that can sometimes still be seen in the Netherlands. This is the feeling I want to give to the viewer of this photo.
For an interior, it gives a sense of calm in the room. It also gives a feeling of being one with nature: the primal nature that has been around us for centuries and is still there after all these years. The colours exude calmness, and timelessness.
