At the back of the monument to Queen Wilhelmina in The Hague, a hushed and almost hidden side of the city unfolds. Whereas the front of the monument radiates strength and national pride, here, on the contrary, peace, sobriety and contemplation prevail. The massive stone plinth, with subdued inscriptions, contrasts with the centuries-old brick walls of the adjoining church. Together, they form a silent dialogue between royal history and religious tradition. The narrow passage, soft greenery and classic lantern reinforce the sense of timelessness. This is not a place of haste or noise, but a space that invites reflection. The absence of people makes the image almost sacred; as if the city is holding its breath here for a moment. The dark tones, diffuse light and robust materials give the picture an understated, monumental character. The Wilhelmina monument commemorates a monarch who symbolises steadfastness and commitment to the country, especially in times of war and uncertainty. This reverse side in particular emphasises that meaning in a subtle way. Not a grand gesture, but a silent presence that derives its strength from simplicity and permanence. This picture is perfect for interiors where tranquillity, history and architecture come together. Think of a study, hallway or business environment where the image does not dominate, but leaves a lasting impression. A photographic tribute to The Hague, seen from a lesser-known but particularly atmospheric angle.
Photography has been my passion since 1975. Whereas in the past I often photographed people, I now mainly focus on photographing landscapes, nature and animals.
