The Oude Kerk in Delft, affectionately known locally as ‘ 'Oude Jan' of 'Scheve Jan' ’, is one of the most distinctive and fascinating historic monuments in the Netherlands. This photograph captures the iconic tower from a surprising and atmospheric perspective, framed by the historic rooftops and the fresh greenery of Delft’s city centre.
What makes the Oude Kerk so unique is the tower’s unmistakable and characteristic lean. When construction of the 75-metre-high stone tower began around 1246, part of the foundation was laid on a filled-in canal. Even whilst it was still being built, the heavy structure began to sink. The master builders managed to halt the process and continued building the tower vertically, which to this day creates the distinctive kink and unique silhouette on the Delft skyline.
With its four graceful corner turrets, striking clock and rich history, the Oude Kerk is not only an architectural marvel but also a symbol of Dutch history. Inside the church lie, amongst other things, the mausoleums of famous historical figures such as naval hero Piet Hein and painter Johannes Vermeer.
This cityscape perfectly captures the warm tones of the centuries-old brickwork, the refined architectural details and the timeless atmosphere of Delft’s canal-side splendour. The contrast between the vibrant foliage in the foreground and the monumental tower against the blue sky makes this a stunning piece of art for your wall.
This piece fits perfectly into a wide range of interior styles: from classic to modern or industrial interiors that could do with a warm, characterful and distinctly Dutch touch. Ideal for lovers of historic architecture, Dutch cityscapes and the nostalgic atmosphere of Delft.
Photography has been my passion since 1975. Whereas in the past I often photographed people, I now mainly focus on photographing landscapes, nature and animals.
