About "De Kattenberg, Heiloo"

About the artwork

In Heiloo, close to the Alkmaar-Uitgeest trunk road and just north of the line of sight from Nijenburg is the Kattenberg. The Kattenberg is a striking hill in the woods with a beautiful large and old lime tree on it. The origins and exact age of the Kattenberg are shrouded in mystery, with archaeologists suspecting that the hill is artificial and dates from the late Middle Ages. However, no research has yet been conducted on it. The name Kattenberg does suggest that the mound may be older: cats are often associated with witchcraft and possibly pre-Christian customs. Is the Kattenberg a burial mound that was later raised? What was the ancient function of this site? Only research can clarify the mound's history, which is shrouded in mists. It is likely that an existing mound was raised with the resulting soil during the digging of the water features around the manor house. In any case, the lime tree on the hill dates from before 1700 and is partly underground with its trunk. The Cat Mountain as such existed according to a will at least before 1789.
