THE TRADE
Curacao's coloured houses.
The Handelskade Curacao is the place where the foundation was laid for the history of Curaçao's economy. At this place, many inhabitants of Curaçao used to be able to earn a living by loading and unloading ships moored at this quay. Piles of goods stood there waiting to be transported. Traders and shopkeepers had their offices, warehouses and shops there.handelskade
This trading quay was once a centre of great activity, a bustle and activity of people, not only ship's crews and workers, but also street traders walking back and forth offering their wares. One also encountered shoppers and strolling pedestrians. Sometimes it was so hectic that there was hardly any room for pedestrians. It was also the mooring of the "Ponchi", Willemstad's main means of transport before the arrival of the Queen Emma Bridge. The historic buildings on the Handelskade, with their distinctive facades, played an important role in the birth and formation of Willemstad.
