The evening cuckoo flower, white silene or line weed (Silene latifolia subsp. alba, synonym: Melandrium album) is a plant of the carnation family (Caryophyllaceae). The species gets its name from its flowers, which open in the evening.
It is an annual to perennial plant, up to 1 m high. The hairy stems are usually straight and branched. The leaves are arranged in pairs on the stem.
The species is dioecious. The unisexual flowers have five white petals, deeply incised at the top. The flowering period is from May to October. The flowers spread a weak smell in the evening. Strictly speaking, they open earlier than in the evening: in the course of the afternoon. The fruit is a box fruit with teeth that opens.
The plant stands in shaded, grassy places, and in nutrient-rich ruins. The nominate Silene latifolia subsp. latifolia has a Mediterranean distribution, the subspecies alba occurs in almost all of Eurasia, except Southeast Asia.
