Cheerful company with masked dancers, Pieter Codde
Representations of elegant, partying young people - 'companions' - were very popular at the beginning of the 17th century. The Amsterdammer Pieter Codde is one of the painters who specialised in this genre.
In this company they eat, drink and make music. In the middle of the room, a woman in a fashionable black dress dances with a man, who has dressed up with a Venetian mask and a mold suit. His two companions on the left are also masked.
