Santa María la Real de La Almudena is the Catholic cathedral of Madrid, Spain. Despite plans for a cathedral in the Spanish capital dating back to the 16th century, construction of the church did not begin until 1883. The cathedral was consecrated by Pope John Paul II on 15 June 1993. The cathedral was initially supposed to be built in a Gothic style, but to make the building fit better with the Royal Palace, it was later decided to use the neoclassical style. The interior is modern with even pop art influences. On a warm summer evening, the square in front of the cathedral attracts many visitors.
