About "Cathedral of Cádiz"

by Silva Wischeropp

About the artwork

One of the most important sights in Cádiz is the 18th century cathedral. It is located directly by the sea and in the historic centre on the Plaza de la Catedral. The ferry harbour, the Santa Cruz church and a Teatro Romano are in the immediate vicinity, and the train station is not far away either.

Risen from the sea
The front portal of the cathedral of Cádiz opens up like a large shell, thus honouring its name Santa Cruz sobre el Mar or Santa Cruz sobre las Aguas. This impression is further emphasised by the pearly white colour, which changes to pale pink in the evening hours. Then the sun sinks into the sea directly behind the cathedral, tinting the water and sky red-orange. You can well imagine what the picture looks like: Postcard.

The bright yellow dome of the cathedral, covered with glazed ceramic tiles, is clearly visible from every point in the city. It floats like an oversized egg yolk above the nueva catedral and the white roofs of Cádiz.

It took 116 years to build the cathedral of Cádiz. Various architects and master builders took the pen in their hands and integrated very different styles: baroque, rococo and neoclassical - the church was then consecrated in 1838.

The light and airy interior of the cathedral, which appears wide and spacious, is structured by Corinthian marble columns. It measures 85 metres long, 60 metres wide and an impressive 52 metres high. Last but not least, it offers pleasantly cool temperatures in the sweltering heat of the Andalusian summer.
