At the westernmost point of mainland Europe stands the ancient lighthouse built in the year 1772 of Cabo do Roca, translated "Rock cape". It was the first lighthouse built in mainland Portugal. For sailors and sailors, the lighthouse is a beacon, a landmark along the European coast of the Atlantic Ocean. It is visible on the open sea up to 48 kilometres away. It is a beautiful monument on a windswept cliff, forms a beautiful unity with the rugged landscape around it. The weather-worn nature here is regularly lashed with punishing winds, storms and rains from the Atlantic. The vegetation is stocky and small and has adapted to the extremes in place. Footpaths have been laid out along the cliffs which are atmospherically shielded with wooden fencing to protect visitors from the greatest dangers. Near the lighthouse is a monument placed in 1997 by Sintra's municipal council. It is a plaque that reads "Cabo da Roca: Onde a terra se acaba e o mar começa" (here ends the land and begins the sea), a line by the famous Portuguese poet Luís de Camões.
Should you be in Portugal, in the Lisbon region, a visit to this beautiful area and the lighthouse is well worthwhile.
