COUPLE IN RED

by Petra Schüßler

“Couple in Red” is a work from my extensive figurative series “Figures in Space”, which was created between 2005 and 2015 and, I am delighted to say, has met with a particularly warm reception amongst art lovers over the years.

This elegant, panoramic portrait format depicts two ethereal, slender silhouettes standing in a deep, inseparable bond. The composition captivates with its high-contrast and deeply emotional interplay of colours: a deep, velvety ruby red at the edges of the picture frames an intensely luminous centre of sunny yellow and orange hues, which radiates pure warmth.

The work was created using my characteristic, deeply tactile technique: entirely without a brush – using only my fingers – I sketched the two graceful figures directly onto the canvas. The glazed layers of paint were applied vigorously with a palette knife, whilst meditative Tibetan mantras and mysterious symbols were etched directly into the still-damp surface. This lends the work a vibrant, multi-layered structure full of spiritual depth.

In an interior setting, ‘Couple in Red’ makes a majestic and highly energetic statement. It brings a pulsating vitality, warmth and timeless elegance to any room. As a vertical focal point, it is ideal for the living room, the entrance hall or as a harmonious haven of tranquillity in the bedroom.
