About the artwork

In the far north-east of India, along the border with Tibet, there are still many authentic Tibetan Buddhist monasteries. The most special monastery, in my opinion, is located in a very remote place, tucked away in an almost empty valley. It was built between 1200 and 1300 and seems to be 'stuck' high against the rocks, like a fortress. The walk to the monastery is just as special as the monastery itself. This photo was taken in 2015. In the spring, a large chunk of the glacier had broken off and as a result, a tidal wave in the Zanskar River had swept away all three bridges. The monks of the monastery had narrowly stretched four steel cables between the two banks of the river. And in between the ropes were woven willow twigs, which at the crossing cracked under the weight of our Western European bodies while the river with melting water raced underneath us. And the crossing was more than worth it!
