Lighthouse the Brandaris, perhaps the most famous lighthouse in the Netherlands. The lighthouse was built in 1594 and modernised several times in succeeding centuries to keep up with the times. For instance, lifts and a radar antenna were installed and it also became the first Dutch lighthouse whose light was fitted with a Fresnel lens.
The lighthouse towers high above the village of West-Terschelling on the west side of the island of Terschelling and still serves as a beacon for shipping on the North Sea and the Wadden Sea.
This photo was taken on a cold winter evening when I noticed fog starting to form. Fog always adds some extra atmosphere to evening photos and, in this particular image, it also makes the beams of light from the lighthouse extra visible. The photo was taken from the Torenstraat on West-Terschelling.
