About the artwork

*** Attention: Real photography - no AI! ***

The Brandenburg Gate is a must-see for every visitor to Berlin. Hardly any other sight is in as many tourist selfies as the large sandstone gate in the heart of the city.

Berlin owes the Brandenburg Gate to King Frederick William II, who commissioned the large sandstone gate to provide a dignified end to the magnificent boulevard Unter den Linden. The gate is one of the largest and most beautiful buildings of classicism. It was built between 1788 and 1791 according to designs by Carl Gotthard Langhans the Elder, who was strongly inspired by the Propylaea on the Acropolis in Athens. Two years after the Brandenburg Gate was completed, the quadriga, a chariot pulled by four horses, was placed on the roof of the gate.

The quadriga was placed on the Brandenburg Gate by Johann Gottfried Schadow in 1793. The sculpture shows a two-wheeled chariot pulled by four horses running side by side. The goddess of victory, Victoria, holds the reins. The quadriga was intended to symbolise the arrival of peace in the city.
