The Berkelpoort is a water gate and part of Zutphen's city wall and located on the eastern edge of the city centre, across the small river Berkel. The gate was built in the 14th century to connect the two settlements on both sides of the Berkel.
Originally, there were two water gates that, together with the city wall, formed a fortress around the city. The other water gate, which was located near Berkelpoortstraat, was demolished in 1774.
In 1888, the Berkelpoort was restored by architect P.J.H. Cuypers. Cuypers preserved the ruinous state of the gate by covering the top of the walls with a layer of cement. A new, more reconstructive restoration followed in 1951.
