The little panda, red panda or cat bear (Ailurus fulgens) is an endangered species that lives in the eastern Himalayan mountains and southwestern China. Like the giant panda, it eats bamboo.
The little panda is not a bear, but belongs to the cat bear family of which it is the only surviving species.
The little panda is more closely related to raccoons than to bears.
The coat colour is red or chestnut brown, apart from white edges on the ears and white patches on the cheeks, around the snout and above the eyes. From the eyes, wide, dark "weeping stripes" run downwards. The tail contains light and dark rings and serves as camouflage and to keep the animal balanced. The red panda has semi-retractable claws, which allow the animal to climb well. Body length is 50 to 64 cm, tail length 25 to 50 cm and weight 3 to 6 kilograms.
The food of this nocturnal animal consists of bamboo shoots and leaves, grasses, roots, fruits, as well as larvae, eggs, mice, lizards and birds. Territory boundaries are marked with urine and a musky excretion from the anal glands. Communication is by short whistles and squeaks. Red pandas'll live to be about 18 years old in the wild, and 30 years in captivity.
