The aurora was extremely active on this night and we were lucky to be staying close to Lake Jökulsárlón. This allowed us to enjoy an hour-long light show of the aurora borealis or also known as northern lights in this beautiful location with no light pollution.
We were on the edge of the completely frozen lake. Normally there are many ice floes in here, but due to the prolonged cold, all ice floes have already drifted out to sea and new floes did not break off from the glacier due to the frost.
Despite the cold night, we were not bothered by it because we were overwhelmed by the spectacle in the sky.
Through the aurora, you can see the stars in the otherwise cloudless sky.
I tried to portray the grandeur of the environment through the ice floes in the foreground.
By taking the photo in portrait, the flaming effect of this formation comes out beautifully. It almost looks like a genie coming out of the bottle.
It was very special to experience this phenomenon.
I was born and live in the Netherlands. From my childhood I have been photographing, but the last 10 years I've been really active with it.
My preference is for landscape and macro photography, but I also like to experiment with patterns and the like.
