About "Atlantic Wall France"

by Peter Poppe

About the artwork

The Atlantic Wall ran from Norway, via Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium to France up to the border with Spain. The defence line, which was never completed, consisted of bunkers, cannons and minefields.

The Atlantic Wall was not a continuous wall of defences as the name suggests. The defences were concentrated on strategic points such as estuaries such as Hoek van Holland and IJmuiden. Defensive posts were built along the intervening coast at a considerable distance from each other. In fact, the Atlantic Wall was a chain of coastal batteries, barricades and support bunkers. In addition to artillery against invasion ships, anti-aircraft and anti-tank guns were also placed. With this anti-tank artillery, tank barriers were often constructed, such as tank moats, dragon's teeth, tank walls and tank traps. The Atlantic Wall is never complete. After the invasion of Normandy on 6 June 1944, which broke through the Atlantic Wall, construction was largely halted. At that time only 10 273 bunkers were finished and 799 bunkers were still under construction.
