This photo was taken on IJmuiden's south pier.
There are two species of seals in the Netherlands, the common and the grey.
The common seal has a round head, the grey one a pointed one.
The nostrils of the common seal are in a V-shape. In the grey seal, they are vertical.
The grey seal's body is perfectly adapted to life in the sea: streamlined and agile.
A fish would have to be very agile to escape this fast predator.
With its strong jaws and sharp teeth, it mainly catches cod.
Its eyes have a special layer that reflects light, like a cat's eye, so it can still see well in dark water.
Grey seals sometimes swim hundreds of kilometres in search of food.
They can stay underwater for up to 20 minutes, diving to a depth of 100 metres.
