Ambassador Cornelis Calkoen in audience with Sultan Ahmed III, Jean Baptiste Vanmour, ca. 1727 - ca. 1730
The actual audience took place in the part of the palace where the sultan lived. After the grand visor meal, Calkoen and his entourage were given kaftans, as a sign of hospitality, but also to cover the clothes of the 'unbelieving' visitors. Ahmed sits on a throne, with four princes next to him. Calkoen will make a speech, and then offer his credentials.
