As an artist, I am very proud of the work 'African Queen', a highly detailed mixed media work in which a beautiful African woman along with a strong lioness is allowed to take the lead role. Decorated with colourful elements that have an African touch, this mixed media work was created from my fascination with the beauty and strength of the African woman and the animals that live in this beautiful continent. The work shows a highly detailed portrait of an African woman, depicted in all her splendour and dignity. Her pose is strong and determined, but also exudes calm and wisdom. Around her, we see a number of symbolic elements, including flowers, African vases, a sun and a drawn elephant's head. The flowers symbolise the beauty and fragility of life, while the vases represent Africa's rich history and culture. The sun symbolises the energy and vitality of the continent and its people. The elephant head represents the strength and intelligence of these majestic animals, which, like the African woman, play an important role in African culture. The whole piece is made on a terra-coloured painted underlayment, which refers to the earthy tones of Africa. Over this, newspaper articles, paint, pictures of a lioness and more have been added. This gives the work a layering and depth befitting the many facets of Africa. It has become a colourful work in which the many elements come together to form a harmonious whole. This work deserves to be printed in a large format so that the viewer can discover all the details and symbolism. It is a tribute to the strength, beauty and wisdom of the African woman and her culture.
