The Afghan border market in the town of Khorogh in Tajikistan is held every Saturday. If there is political unrest, it can be closed for weeks at a time. A bridge has been built over the Pandzh River which connects Tajikistan and Afghanistan. This unique market supports the economy and the bond of friendship between the two countries.
We walk through the entrance. A large crowd of people fills the market which is full of rugs and stalls where Afghans sell their goods. Tajik and Afghan soldiers walk authoritatively past everyone and also keep an eye on us. Probably for our safety. It spreads like wildfire that we are at the market. Soon, people come up to us, to talk, to take photos or just to have a look. Their interest and friendliness touches us and we don't want to skip anyone.
We are happy and grateful to have met these people, we drive away with the hope of visiting Afghanistan one day and learning more about these friendly people.
