The nuthatch (Sitta europaea) is a bird in the family of nuthatches (Sittidae). The scientific name of the species was published in 1758 by Carl Linnaeus in the tenth edition of Systema naturae. The name 'nuthatch' refers to the plugging of the nest entrance, although walking up and down against the tree trunk no doubt also played a role. The nuthatch is the only member of the family in Benelux. It can climb down along tree trunks with its head down, and in this it differs from woodpeckers and treecreepers, which only climb upwards. Moreover, woodpeckers use their tails to support themselves, which the nuthatch does not do. It is a fairly common resident bird in almost all of Europe. Its distinctive and clear-sounding call is often the first indication of its presence. In winter, it is a regular visitor to gardens offering peanuts's.
