About ‘A face in the shadow of the hat’ by Rüdiger Lutz

In this black-and-white portrait, I capture a moment defined by darkness, light and restraint. The hat sits low over the face, obscuring any direct view of the eyes. Instead, the mouth, nose, neck and the patch of light skin stand out against the black background. This lends the image a sense of stillness, focus and mystery. What fascinates me about this motif is the power of omission. Not the whole face is shown, but only what the light reveals. It is precisely this that creates tension: the person remains present, yet not fully accessible. The hat acts as a boundary between openness and concealment, between presence and withdrawal.

Upon closer inspection, subtle details emerge: the woven texture of the hat, the sharp edge of shadow above the face, the gentle curve of the neck and the small highlight on the lips. The work tells its story not through a direct gaze, but through posture, light and silence. It invites us to perceive the hidden as much as the visible.
