About ‘The White Tower in Rothenburg ob der Tauber’ by Rüdiger Lutz

In this black-and-white photograph, I have captured the view down a narrow alley in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. On the left, half-timbered façades with clean lines stretch across the frame; on the right, narrow houses and an old street lamp frame the path. At the end of the alley, the White Tower rises up with its clock and distinctive roof finial, serving as the tranquil focal point of the scene. What fascinates me about this image is the strong sense of depth. The houses stand close together and almost automatically draw the eye to the tower. This makes the image feel like a walk through the city’s history — not as a bustling tourist attraction, but as a quiet moment amidst walls, windows and shadows.

Upon closer inspection, small details emerge: the structure of the half-timbering, the clock on the tower, the narrow lantern on the right-hand façade, the signs in the alleyway and the varying rooflines. The black-and-white effect emphasises shapes, contrasts and the historic atmosphere. In an interior setting, this piece is particularly well-suited to those who love old towns, architecture and timeless views.
