About the artwork

A Curtiss P-40C Warhawk is ready to take off for a demonstration flight during the Flying Legend Airshow in Duxford.

The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk was an American fighter aircraft of the Second World War. The prototype made its first flight on October 15, 1938 and the aircraft was used until the end of World War II. A total of 13,738 aircraft were produced until November 1944, at the Curtiss plant in Buffalo, New York.

The design was derived from the P-36 Hawk, which allowed the aircraft to enter production quickly. In the United States, the aircraft was known as the Warhawk, while in the Soviet Union and the United Kingdom it was called Tomahawk or Kittyhawk, depending on the variant.

The aircraft was not used over the European front, but saw extensive action during the North African Campaign and in Asia. It was used as a fighter, escort fighter and fighter-bomber. Among its users was the Military Aviation of the Royal Dutch East Indies Army, which had the type in service from 1942 to 1949.
