KLM Boeing 747-400M combi, the PH-BFV, painted in its most recent livery, taxies towards Polderbaan for departure to a distant destination.
The phasing out of the Boeing 747-400 Jumbo jet at KLM will be completed by the end of 2020. What many people do not know is that only 5 aircraft from the 747 fleet were full passenger jets. The remaining 17 of the 747s are so-called combis. These are aircraft which consist of the first 50% of the aircraft of a passenger section, the rear 50% is for carrying cargo. Behind the kitchen and the toilets on this aircraft type is just a door to the cargo section.
The combis had to leave the fleet partly due to new legislation in the US, where it is no longer allowed to carry cargo in the same space as the passenger compartment. Many combi's flew to the US.
Photo of this PH-BFV I made on 26 May 2017.
