About the artwork

The World Solar Challenge is a biennial competition for solar cars, cars that run on solar energy. The race goes right through Australia over a distance of 3021 kilometers. [1] The start is in the northern city of Darwin and the competition goes through Alice Springs to the southern city of Adelaide. The first World Solar Challenge took place in 1987. From the World Solar Challenge 2009, the competition is part of the larger Global Green Challenge, in which other sustainable vehicles also participate.

Winner Challenge 2009 and 2011: "Tokai Challenger", Tokai University
Winner of the Challenge in 2009 and 2011 was the "Tokai Challenger", Japan Tokai University Solar Car Team, winner in 2013, 2015 and 2017 the Nuna 7, Nuna 8 and Nuna 9 from Delft. This brings the number of times that Delft has won the race to seven, and the teams from Delft have by far won the largest number of times. The Honda Dream of Honda and the Tokai Challenger of Tokai University are in shared second place, each with two first places. The rest of the teams only won once.
